The inclusion of potassium nitrate at a concentration of 5% w/w makes Elsenz an effective toothpaste for managing dentin hypersensitivity, a common condition characterized by sharp, temporary pain in response to stimuli such as hot, cold, sweet, or acidic substances, as well as brushing. When the protective layers of enamel and cementum are worn away or recede, the underlying dentin, which contains microscopic tubules leading to the tooth’s nerve, becomes exposed. Potassium nitrate works by penetrating these tubules and blocking the transmission of pain signals to the nerve, thus providing relief from sensitivity. In addition to its desensitizing action, Elsenz Toothpaste contains sodium monofluorophosphate at a concentration of 0.7% w/w, which corresponds to 917 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride.
