CIC refers to a long-term condition characterized by infrequent, difficult, or painful bowel movements, while IBS-C involves both constipation and other gastrointestinal symptoms, such as bloating and abdominal discomfort.
The active ingredient in Plecanat is plecanatide, which is a guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) agonist. Plecanatide works by stimulating the GC-C receptors located in the intestines, leading to increased production of cyclic GMP (cGMP). This process enhances fluid secretion in the intestinal lining, softening stools and promoting more regular bowel movements. As a result, it can help alleviate symptoms associated with constipation and IBS-C, improving overall bowel function.
By increasing fluid content in the intestines, Plecanat also helps to stimulate peristalsis (the muscle contractions that move food and waste through the digestive tract), which further aids in relieving constipation.
