Description:
Tenepride 20mg Tab contains teneligliptin, an oral hypoglycemic agent belonging to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors.
It is used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance and a progressive decline in pancreatic beta-cell function, leading to elevated blood glucose levels.
Teneligliptin works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which is responsible for the inactivation of incretin hormones, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).
These incretins are released from the intestine in response to food intake and play a crucial role in glucose homeostasis. They stimulate insulin secretion from the pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner and suppress glucagon secretion from the alpha cells.
By inhibiting DPP-4, teneligliptin increases the levels and prolongs the action of GLP-1 and GIP, leading to enhanced insulin release and reduced glucagon secretion, particularly when blood glucose levels are high. This mechanism helps to lower both fasting and postprandial (after-meal) blood glucose levels without significantly increasing the risk of hypoglycemia when used as monotherapy.
