Description:
Unistar 20/150mg Cap is a combination antiretroviral medication used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It contains two active ingredients: tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), present as tenofovir disoproxil, in a 20mg strength (which suggests a formulation for pediatric use or specific dosing regimens), and lamivudine at a strength of 150mg. Both tenofovir and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
They work by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme that HIV needs to convert its RNA into DNA, a crucial step in the viral replication process. By blocking this enzyme, these drugs help to reduce the viral load (the amount of HIV in the blood) in people with HIV infection and slow down the progression of the disease.
Unistar 20/150mg capsules are taken orally, usually once daily, as part of a comprehensive HIV treatment regimen that often includes other antiretroviral medications. The specific combination and dosage are determined by a healthcare professional experienced in the management of HIV infection, based on factors such as the patient’s viral load, CD4 count, and other medical conditions. Common side effects can vary but may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and headache. Regular monitoring of viral load and CD4 count is essential to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
