Description:

Vertizac Tab contains betahistine hydrochloride, a medication used primarily for the management of symptoms associated with Ménière’s disease, a disorder affecting the inner ear. These symptoms commonly include vertigo (episodes of a spinning sensation), tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, or other sounds in the ears), and fluctuating or progressive hearing loss, often accompanied by a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear. While the exact way betahistine works is not fully elucidated, several theories suggest its beneficial effects in Ménière’s disease.

One prominent hypothesis is that betahistine enhances the microcirculation in the inner ear by acting as a partial agonist of histamine H1 receptors and an antagonist of histamine H3 receptors. This improved blood flow is thought to help alleviate the endolymphatic hydrops, the abnormal buildup of fluid in the inner ear believed to be the underlying cause of Ménière’s symptoms.

Additionally, betahistine may have a modulatory effect on neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and the inner ear, which could contribute to a reduction in the frequency and severity of vertigo attacks. It may also play a role in reducing the intensity of tinnitus in some patients. Vertizac Tab is typically prescribed for long-term use to help manage the chronic and episodic nature of Ménière’s disease, aiming to decrease the frequency and intensity of vertigo spells, and potentially improving associated symptoms like tinnitus and hearing disturbances.

The dosage of Vertizac Tab is individualized based on the patient’s response and the severity of their condition, often starting at a lower dose (e.g., 8mg) and potentially increasing to a higher dose (e.g., 16mg or 24mg) taken multiple times daily. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food. Common side effects of betahistine are usually mild and transient, primarily involving the gastrointestinal system (such as nausea, stomach upset, and bloating) and occasionally headaches.
