Description:
Potassium permanganate is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula KMnO₄. It is a purplish-black crystalline salt that dissolves in water to produce intensely pink or purple solutions, depending on the concentration.
It is a strong oxidizing agent with disinfectant, deodorizing, and astringent properties, making it useful for various applications in medicine, water treatment, and chemical analysis. It is also known by the common name Condy’s crystals.
In medicinal applications, dilute solutions of potassium permanganate (typically 1 in 10,000 dilution, resulting in a light pink color) can be used topically as a cleansing and disinfecting agent for certain skin conditions. It is effective in drying weeping, exudative dermatoses such as weeping eczema, impetiginized eczema, pompholyx, and blistering skin conditions like pemphigoid. Historically, it was also used for fungal infections, although more effective and cosmetically acceptable treatments like topical azoles are now preferred.
