Description:
Sucrafil Suspension is an oral medication primarily used for the short-term management of active duodenal ulcers, as well as for the treatment of gastric and benign ulcers. Its active ingredient, sucralfate, is a unique agent that works through a physical and chemical mechanism rather than by neutralizing or inhibiting gastric acid secretion.
Sucralfate is a basic aluminum salt of sucrose octasulfate that, upon contact with the acidic environment of the stomach and duodenum, undergoes a process of polymerization and cross-linking. This results in the formation of a viscous, sticky, gel-like substance that strongly adheres to the proteinaceous exudate present at ulcer sites.
This adherent coating acts as a protective barrier, shielding the ulcerated areas of the gastrointestinal mucosa from the aggressive factors present in the gastric environment, including hydrochloric acid, pepsin (a proteolytic enzyme), and bile salts. By preventing these substances from further irritating and eroding the ulcer, sucralfate creates a microenvironment that favors the natural healing processes of the gastrointestinal lining. It also inhibits the back diffusion of hydrogen ions and may bind to pepsin and bile acids, further reducing their damaging effects on the mucosa.
Sucralfate has minimal systemic absorption, with the majority of the administered dose remaining within the gastrointestinal tract and eventually being excreted in the feces. This limited absorption contributes to its relatively benign side effect profile compared to medications that have systemic effects.
