Description:
Vertin 24 mg Tab and Vertin 8mg Tab contain betahistine dihydrochloride, a medication primarily used to treat the symptoms of Ménière’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear that can cause episodes of vertigo (a sensation of spinning), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hearing loss.
The exact mechanism of action of betahistine is not fully understood, but it is believed to work in several ways to alleviate these symptoms. One proposed mechanism is that betahistine may improve blood flow to the inner ear by acting as a partial agonist of histamine H1 receptors and an antagonist of histamine H3 receptors. This improved blood flow could help to reduce the pressure buildup in the inner ear that is thought to contribute to Ménière’s symptoms.
Another possible mechanism is that betahistine may act on neurotransmitters in the brain and inner ear, helping to reduce the severity and frequency of vertigo attacks. It may also have some effect on reducing tinnitus. Vertin is typically prescribed for long-term management of Ménière’s disease to reduce the frequency and severity of vertigo episodes and to help improve associated symptoms like tinnitus and hearing loss.
The dosage of Vertin varies depending on the individual patient’s needs and response to treatment. It is usually started at a lower dose (e.g., 8mg) and may be increased to a higher dose (e.g., 24mg) taken multiple times a day. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food.
Common side effects of betahistine are generally mild and transient, and may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, indigestion, and bloating, as well as headaches. These side effects often improve with continued use or dose adjustment.
Betahistine is generally well-tolerated, but it is contraindicated in patients with pheochromocytoma (a rare tumor of the adrenal gland). Patients with asthma or a history of peptic ulcers should use betahistine with caution. It is important to take Vertin consistently as prescribed by a doctor for optimal benefit. Regular follow-up with a healthcare professional is important to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment and to manage any potential side effects.
