Description:
Vozan-10mg Tab and Vozan 20mg Tab contain voglibose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Voglibose works by inhibiting the action of alpha-glucosidase enzymes in the small intestine. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down complex carbohydrates into glucose, which is then absorbed into the bloodstream.
By inhibiting these enzymes, voglibose slows down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, resulting in a smaller and slower rise in blood glucose levels after meals (postprandial hyperglycemia). This mechanism of action is particularly beneficial in controlling blood sugar spikes that occur after eating. Vozan is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise in patients with type 2 diabetes who are not adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone, or in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin or sulfonylureas. The dosage of voglibose is usually taken just before or with the first bite of each main meal to maximize its effect on postprandial glucose levels.
Common side effects associated with alpha-glucosidase inhibitors like voglibose are primarily gastrointestinal in nature, and may include flatulence, abdominal distension, and diarrhea. These side effects are often dose-dependent and tend to decrease over time as the body adjusts to the medication.
To minimize these effects, voglibose treatment is often started at a low dose and gradually increased as tolerated. Voglibose is contraindicated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, or severe renal impairment. It is a prescription medication and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential to assess the effectiveness of voglibose treatment.
